What is your compass?

STEP Fundraiser for food insecurity with Brian

Hellooooo you precious pearl,

Have you ever noticed how what matters to you changes over time?

The things that once fueled us don’t always fit forever. And honestly? That’s probably a really good thing.

My dear friend Brian is one of the most generous humans I know. What fills his cup is helping people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. Put him in a room talking about ways to make an impact, helping people access resources, or feeding someone in need and you can feel his whole spirit come alive.

That’s his compass.

Not because someone told him it should be. Not because it sounds impressive at a dinner party. Not because society handed him a checklist and said, this is success.

Because it matters to him.

And watching him has reminded me of something important…

We all have a compass.

The challenge is that many of us are living by an old one.

Maybe at one point your compass was achievement.

The title.
The promotion.
The seat at the C-level table.

And by the way, I deeply respect that path. I have walked alongside many brilliant people helping them get there. I know the courage, sacrifice, and commitment it takes to lead at that level.

Sometimes, that is exactly the right compass.

But sometimes?

You get there and realize…

Ohhhh. I thought this was the destination.

Maybe what once mattered no longer fills your cup.

Maybe the title isn’t enough anymore.

Maybe your compass has quietly shifted while you were busy building a life.

Or perhaps, and this is important too, maybe you never wanted the title in the first place. Maybe you just thought you were supposed to.

Maybe your compass points toward creativity.
Or family.
Or peace.
Or contribution.
Or adventure.
Or healing.
Or building community.
Or slowing wayyyyy down.

There are seasons where our compass is about growth and ambition.
There are seasons where it is about rest and recovery.
There are seasons where we are called to serve.
And seasons where we are finally learning to choose ourselves.

None of them are wrong.

But every once in a while, we have to slow down long enough to ask:

Where is my compass pointing now?

Not where it pointed ten years ago.
Not where someone else thinks it should point.
Not where fear wants it to point.

But where your heart quietly whispers when the noise settles.

Because the truth is…

If you follow someone else’s compass long enough, you may wake up one day and realize you built a life that looks good from the outside but doesn’t quite feel like yours.

So here is my invitation for you this week:

Slow down.
Take yourself out for coffee. Go for a walk. Sit by the ocean or lake. Journal. Stare at the moon.

And ask yourself:

  • What fills my cup now?
  • What feels meaningful to me in this season of life?
  • If no one judged me, what direction would I go?

Your compass may surprise you.

And if it has changed?

That doesn’t mean you failed.

It means you evolved.

Jessica
