💎 The Fear of Failing… After You’ve “Made It”

Days before I failed to make the Larkya Pass in Nepal in 2016

Hellooooo, you shucker you!

You may be surprised to hear this.

When I coach highly successful people, one of the fears they run into is the fear of failure.

Once someone has achieved a high level of success, there’s a pressure—whether imposed by oneself or others—to stay there.
To keep performing at the same level.
To never slip, never miss, never fall.

That pressure can be paralyzing.
Instead of chasing the next dream, many stop trying altogether.
Because if they try something new and it doesn’t work, they believe it could undo their success or change how others see them.

This fear of failure shows up in perfectionists too.
They might never start something—even if it’s a dream in their heart—because if it doesn’t go “right,” they fear they won’t be loved, or their image will be tarnished.
They think: “If I can’t be amazing at it, I’d rather not do it at all.”

Sound familiar?

Here is the cure I offer my clients:
👉 Do something you’re guaranteed to fail at.

  • If you think you’re a terrible singer, take a singing lesson.
  • If you’re convinced you can’t paint, buy the paints anyway.
  • If you’re used to being in control, take an improv class.

When you practice failing—on purpose—you free yourself from the prison of perfection.
You remember what it feels like to play, to learn, to grow, to laugh.
You realize that failure isn’t fatal.
It’s feedback.
It’s freedom.

Because success without growth isn’t really success.
It’s just a another shell to hide in.

So tell me…

What’s something you’d be willing to fail at this week—just for the joy of being human?

If you are ready to try going for your dream, even if it means you might fail, I have a coaching group for you called The Shucking Dream Team. It is a six month transformational journey that starts in January. You can find the details here.

I also have an 1.5 hour online workshop called Shuck the Holidays to work with boundaries so can stay sane during this holiday season. This is for anyone who could benefit from finding your voice or putting YOU on your priority list. Click the button to learn more.
